About Lynn

I have been interested in various types of craftwork since childhood. About 5 years ago, I became interested in general wood working when I bought a scroll saw. Initially, I concentrated on making clocks, gifts and some small furniture pieces. Last year, while visiting Welbeck Sawmill, I was intrigued by a sign advertising the GBWG and decided to give turning a try. Last Christmas, Santa brought me a Mastercraft 37" lathe with some tools to start.

I think I have spent more hours at our GBWG monthly meetings than actually using the lathe, however, the photos show some of the pieces I have completed. Hopefully, this year, I will find more time to spend practicing turning techniques and learning to sharpen each tool effectively.

As a beginner, I would advise anyone starting out to read, read, read!! Get a feel for what type of projects you would be interested in creating, and what different types of equipment are available to you. Then decide on the lathe and tools best suited to your needs. Purchase good quality tools, one at a time, as required. (If possible take a beginner class before you make your purchase). Enjoy the process of creating as well as the end result. Perfection is great, but so is the feeling when the use of a new tool is accomplished, or a technique is mastered for the first time.

Slim Line Pens

Slim Line Pens

These are all 7mm pens turned at Welbeck woodshow. Top one is walnut and next is maple. I left off the clips so they do not catch in a women's purse. Next two have clips and are made of diamondwood and the bottom one is Padauk

Candle Holder

3 3/4" diameter x 6 1/2" tall.

Made from laminated 3/4" maple. First article I turned. The design transformed as I turned, depending on how the tools cut and eye appeal. It is a bit rough to the feel but that is due to inexperience.
