This woodturning tip comes from Edric Florence of
Southwestern Pennsylvania. In his on-line article on
making a natural edge bowl, Edric uses superb photographs
and provides a high level walk through of the process.
Excerpt
from the full article:
". . . In this photo with the lathe stopped, you
can see that I am holding the cutting tool (I use specially
ground custom-made bowl gouges for this work) very firmly
in my hand and against the tool rest, which has been
brought in as close to the work as possible to minimize
vibration. Because the wood is so thin at this point
and because I usually turn wood that is still green,
it is very flexible as it spins on the lathe at high
rpms. At this point, even the smallest twitch or slightest
miscalculation can render hours of careful work into
a thousand splinters in less than a hundredth of a second!
