Woodturning Tips & Jigs

Masking Tape Toolrest Template

Please review an important notice before using this woodturning tip

Using a template can make it easier to make duplicate parts (e.g., chair legs, pepper mills, etc.). A permanent template made from plywood is probably a better solution for production or frequent turning, however, for quick or one-off duplication, the "masking tape template" works well.

Masking tape template is a simple two-step tip:

  1. Place a strip of masking tape (painters tape works well too) across the toolrest.
  2. Mark the out the key cuts and reference points.

Note: The author does not profess this to be an original tip. He notes that it has been used for many years and in many forms. This version was submitted by I.A.Seidman of the Grey-Bruce Woodturners Guild.
